Outreach campaigns in 2002 from C-SPAN, Lifetime Television and MTV: Music
Television will be in contention for this year's "Golden Beacon Awards," the
highest annual honor given by the Cable Television Public Affairs
C-SPAN was nominated for its "Presidential Timeline" giveaway, in which a
six-foot poster showing the public-service careers of all 42 U.S. presidents was
distributed free to junior-high and high-school teachers nationwide last fall.
More than 60,000 educators requested the posters.
Lifetime's nomination covers "Stop Violence Against Women," the channel's
annual awareness-raising campaign covering domestic violence and sexual assault.
The 2003 edition kicks off Sunday night with first-run episodes of The
Division, Strong Medicine and For the People on both
Dealing with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases was the focus
of MTV's Golden Beacon-nominated "Protect Yourself" project. MTV conducted the
effort -- involving original programs, Web-site material and a toll-free hotline
-- as part of its ongoing "Fight for Your Rights" outreach.
The CTPAA will hand out its Golden Beacon award April 1 in Washington, D.C.,
as part of the organization's annual forum conference.
