Current, DirecTV Set Philly Event


Current and DirecTV Inc. will hold a freelaunch celebration in Philadelphia’s Dilworth Plaza (Center City) Thursday.

The network held a similar event in New York earlier this month. It launched Aug. 1.

Current said the “Take Back TV” rally will feature remarks by chairman and former Vice President Al Gore and performances by The Roots, Little Brother, Fishbone, Rich Medina, local act Pepper’s Ghostand others.

The network added that tickets are free but available exclusively online ( No one will be admitted without a ticket, Current said, adding that gates open at 5 p.m. and the event runs from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

“From everything we’ve seen and heard since the launch of Current TV Aug. 1, we know there’s a real, tangible demand for a network that empowers young people to create the TV they want to watch,” Gore said in a prepared statement.

“This Philadelphia event extends the same message, encouraging thousands of young adults to bring their passions to the medium and to demand that their voices be heard,” he added.
