CWA Loses Vote in Spokane

Comcast Corp. employees in Communications Workers of America Local 7918 here voted to leave the union on May 9.

A decertification effort prevailed in a 33-18 vote, CWA spokesman Patrick Hunt said last week.

Technical ranks in Spokane – a former AT&T Broadband system — have a high turnover rate, and union backers claim the company hired only prospects with anti-union views.

Recent Comcast efforts promoting decertification votes have been mixed. For instance, two votes to throw out the union have been held in Fresno, Calif., since that unit organized in July 2001. Both decertifications failed, according to union communications.

Another Comcast unit, in Ocean City, Md., also declined in a vote to decertify late last year. That Maryland unit is trying to negotiate a contract. Fresno and Ocean City are former AT&T Broadband systems.

In Pittsburgh, the CWA is conducting a public-relations campaign, trying to gain an edge with Comcast in contract talks.
