Digitalsmiths, a specialist in video metadata and indexing solutions, has acquired privately held Gotuit Media, another provider of metadata applications for online video, for an undisclosed sum.

As a result of the acquisition, Digitalsmiths said, it now controls more than 35 patents covering core metadata creation, aggregation and other applications. Gotuit CEO Mark Pascarella will remain involved in the combined company during the transition, and will sit on the Digitalsmiths' advisory board, the companies said.

"Deep metadata is the engine that powers the consumption of digital
media," noted Ben Weinberger, CEO of Digitalsmiths in a statement. "By
combining our ability to scale libraries of content and Gotuit's
broadcast capabilities, we've created the most comprehensive solution
for video indexing and metadata monetization available to serve the
media industry across multiple platforms and content types-movies,
sports, news and television for both library and media and live
broadcasts."

Digitalsmiths, based in Morrisville, N.C., existing investors include Cisco Systems, .406 Ventures, Chrysalis Ventures and The Aurora Fund. Its customers include Warner Bros., Telepictures and TMZ.com.

Gotuit, based in Woburn, Mass., was founded in 2000 with investors including Highland Capital Partners and Atlas Venture. Its clients include Turner Broadcasting System, Fox, Sports Illustrated, World Wrestling Entertainment and ABC.
