DirecTV Inc. said Tuesday that it would begin offering local broadcast
channels from Providence, R.I., Wednesday.
That brings the number of local broadcast markets for the direct-broadcast
satellite company to 44.
Because the six local channels will be delivered from the 119 degrees west
orbital slot, rather than DirecTV's core location at 101 degrees, subscribers
will need slightly larger satellite dishes and receivers that can process
signals from multiple orbital locations.
DirecTV has announced plans for four other local-market launches later this
summer: Oklahoma City; Buffalo, N.Y.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Norfolk,
