Keeping the ball rolling on TV Everywhere, Starz Entertainment announced that DirecTV customers who subscribe to the premium network’s services now have access to its corresponding Starz Play and Encore Play websites and apps for no extra charge.
The satellite operator has previously offered Starz content online through its own DirecTV Everywhere service, under a deal reached in April 2012. DirecTV becomes the third affiliate to offer Starz Play and Encore Play, along with Cox Communications and AT&T U-verse TV.
Starz still trails rival HBO on the TV Everywhere front, as HBO has secured deals with operators representing more than 98% of the U.S. to offer the multiplatform HBO Go service. Starz also has agreements with Comcast, Dish Network and Verizon FiOS TV which offer Starz content through their respective online services.
Meanwhile, earlier this week DirecTV announced it added shows and movies from more than 30 networks available through the DirecTV Everywhere portal and apps.
Starz Play and Encore Play currently are accessible through Wi-Fi and broadband connections; the programmer is developed support for cellular connectivity and apps for Android phones and tablets and gaming consoles.
Starz Play offers approximately 400 monthly selections, including 300 movies from Walt Disney Co. and Sony Pictures Television plus 100 episodes of original series, including Spartacus, Magic City and Boss. Encore Play provides about 900 selections.
“We are very pleased to expand our relationship with DirecTV and add Starz Play and Encore Play to the suite of premium offerings provided by one of our largest customers,” Ed Huguez, Starz’s president of affiliate distribution, said in a statement.
Starz and Encore are included as part of DirecTV’s Starz Super Pack, and Encore also is available in the DirecTV Choice Ultimate package.
