DirecTV Inc. will expand its use of Thomson’s Grass Valley network technologies under a deal announced Wednesday.

The deal -- an expansion of a similar agreement announced last spring -- will increase the direct-broadcast satellite provider’s usage of Grass Valley encoders, multiplexers and signal-management products in offering local terrestrial-broadcast channels via satellite.

“Having proven the strength of our encoding and networking technologies in our work with DirecTV over the past year, we are excited to expand our long-standing relationship with the company to help bring the highest-quality programming to its customers,” Thomson Broadcast & Media Solutions president Marc Valentin said in a prepared statement.
