DirecTv is adding the PlayStation 3 gaming console to its distribution playbook for its NFL Sunday Ticket To Go mobile service.
The satellite service said Wednesday that it will distribute its exclusive live game out-of-market NFL package to both current DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket customers as well as non-DirecTv fans through PlayStation 3 video game consoles, joining Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League in offering games through the Sony-produced players.
Non DirecTv subscribers will pay of $340 for the subscriber authenticated-based PlayStation offering, $5 more than the Sunday Ticket package price, said DirecTv. Sunday Ticket subscribers will get the service as part of the additional $50 NFL Sunday Ticket To Go service, said the satellite service.
"It's our attempt to open up the universe a bit to people that can't get DirecTv - students, people who live in big apartment buildings and people who live in New York City - and it's a new revenue stream for us," DirecTv senior director of product management Alex Kaplan told Multichannel News.
Kaplan would not say how many Playstation users DirecTv expects to sign up but did say that the company has "control" over the number of Sunday Ticket PlayStation subscribers. "We're not going to let it go to an unlimited number," he said. "We're trying to figure out what is the market for this at that price point."
DirecTv will also offer Sunday Ticket through other alternative distribution platforms such as Motorola's XOOM and Samsung Galaxy tablets; Motorola's Android phones; the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch; Blackberry devices with 3G or wifi;, Palm Pre/Pixi, and other Droid-branded phones.
For fantasy football buffs, DirecTv has teamed with the league to allow NFL.com fantasy football players to get up-to-date stats for their team players onscreen. The broadband app allows players to log in with their NFL.com user name and password to manage and track the teams in realtime onscreen.
Also by selecting an on-screen "Watch Now" icon assigned to their fantasy player, the viewer can jump to that player's game in progress.
Also new this year, fans can tune to a new Mix Channel format for late afternoon games. While DirecTv will continue to display last year's eight-channel Mix when there is a full schedule of Sunday games, the network will offer a new four-channel mix when there are four or fewer games in the afternoon TV window.
