Los Angeles -- DirecTv Inc. will continue its move toward
offering differentiated pay-per-view programming next month with the exclusive
distribution of a female-oriented business conference.
The three-and-one-half-hour event, 'The Women's
Millennium,' will feature management and family issues experts who will address a
variety of issues facing women workers today, said the service. Speakers include TV
journalist Linda Ellerbee.
The event will retail at a suggested price of $14.95.
DirecTv will donate the proceeds from the event to Concept: Cure, a nonprofit organization
dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer.
The show is one of several events that the direct-broadcast
satellite provider has developed exclusively for its 150-channel PPV operation. In 1996,
for example, the network offered episodes of children's show Beast Wars. The
network most recently signed a deal with Warner Bros. to produce a series of monthly
concerts, some of which could originate on PPV. Last January, DirecTv, in association with
Manga Entertainment, offered 30 Japanese-produced animation titles.
''The Women's Millennium' reflects our
strategy to support our mainstream offerings with niche entertainment,' said
Stephanie Campbell, senior vice president of programming for DirecTv, in a statement.
