DirecTV Tightens Belt With Hiring Freeze

In reaction to the dour economy, DirecTV has imposed a hiring freeze and delayed all but its most important capital projects, an executive said Tuesday.

Jonathan Rubin, DirecTV’s senior vice president of financial planning and investor relations, made the remarks at the UBS Global Media and Communications conference in New York.

The nation’s largest direct-broadcast-satellite provider has pushed back the construction of one satellite, according to Rubin, but will go ahead and launch DirecTV-12 in the second half of next year. With that bird, DirecTV can expand its HD offering to 200 channels.
