Dish Adds Programming


Dish Network is adding several new channels to its direct-broadcast satellite
packages this month, EchoStar Communications Corp. chairman Charlie Ergen said
Monday night during an on-air 'Charlie Chat' with subscribers.

After nearly six years of splitting a single feed during different dayparts,
The Independent Film Channel and WE: Women's Entertainment (formerly Romance
Classics), will each enjoy 24-hour status on Dish effective Tuesday, Jan.

Next week, Dish will also add Speed Channel and MuchMusic USA to its
'America's Top 100' package. Speed Channel, formerly Speedvision, had been
available on the more expensive 'Top 150' package.

The channel additions come just ahead of the Feb. 1 price increases EchoStar
announced last week.

In answer to a customer's call, Ergen acknowledged that EchoStar was in
negotiations with Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network, which carries New
York Yankees Major League Baseball games on a regional basis.

Dish wants to make YES available 'at a reasonable, a la carte basis,'
EchoStar vice president of programming Michael Schwimmer said during the chat.
'Unfortunately, it's not available to us on that basis.'

EchoStar beefed up its international programming Monday by introducing a
three-channel 'Chinese Plus' package for $24.99 per month and 'Dish Latino Max'
