EchoStar Communications Corp. said Wednesday that it plans to partner with
SBC Communications Inc. to bundle digital-subscriber-line Internet access with
its direct-broadcast satellite television service.
The companies plan to position the bundle as an alternative to cable packages
of video and data.
Consumers eventually stand to save up to $10 per month under the bundled
offers, the companies said in a press release.
SBC and EchoStar are also researching the feasibility of combining their DSL
and DBS platforms to create advanced services such as video-on-demand.
SBC markets under the brands SBC Southwestern Bell, SBC Pacific Bell, SBC
Nevada Bell, SBC Ameritech and SBC SNET.
EchoStar has proposed to buy Hughes Electronics Corp. pending regulatory
approval. Hughes already owns a DSL company, DirecTV
