Disney Channel reached a milestone in its 10-year campaign to convert the
network from premium to basic as it passed the 80 million basic-subscriber
Since 1996 -- when The Walt Disney Co. stepped up the conversion effort --
its subscriber count has grown 344 percent as the channel picked up 62.1 million
There are still a few operators that carry Disney as a premium, though.
About 100,000 Time Warner Cable subscribers still get the network as a
premium, as that MSO has until the end of the year to convert all of its
subscribers under a carriage deal cut in May 2000.
