DIY Network is counterprogramming against the Super Bowl with a viewer “Knit In” to help needy people keep warm.
On Sunday, Feb. 4, while National Football League fans are enjoying the Chicago Bears versus the Indianapolis Colts, DIY will be encouraging viewers to knit and crochet small squares of yarn that will be sewn together into blankets and distributed to women’s shelters, nursing homes and day-care centers.
Each seven-inch-by-nine-inch creation donated by DIY viewers will be put to good use by Warm Up America!, a charitable organization dedicated to the creation of handmade blankets, clothing and accessories to help those in need.
From 5 p.m.-11 p.m., DIY will assist knitting fans with a marathon of series Knitty Gritty episodes. DIY knitting expert and Knitty Gritty host Vickie Howell will participate in a live blog during the Knit In.
Featured Knitty Gritty episodes include notable guests such as singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb, The Breeders’ lead guitarist Kelley Deal and Lily Chin, the world’s fastest crocheter.
DIY’s efforts to help keep needy Americans warmer will be documented in a one-hour special, scheduled to air on the network early next year.
