Cablevision Systems CEO James Dolan said the MSO's new user interface - dubbed Onyx - should begin its rollout in the fourth quarter, with full deployment across its 3 million customer Eastern footprint by the end of the year.
Onyx is a more customer friendly user interface and includes a searchable channel guide - Dolan said it resembles UI's from online video providers like Netflix, but better - and marks the first new UI for Cablevision customers in years. The rollout will not require a change to set-top boxes and primarily involves a new software download. Cablevision said it will conduct the Onyx rollout in stages to limit any customer disturbance, but that it should be completed by the end of the year.
On a conference call with analysts to discuss second quarter results, Dolan said it is part of an overall 18-point plan to bring the cable operator back to growth.
Users of Cablevision's Optimum App for the IPad and laptops are already familiar with Onyx, as it has been the UI for that app since its inception. Cablevision also plans to be all-digital by the end of the year - it is currently 98.5% digital now - which will allow for a wide rollout of its RS-DVR network DVR product only about 200,000 Cablevision customers currently have access to the product, which will give customers whole-home DVR functionality without having to have a physical DVR at their residence.
Dolan said that Cablevision also plans to relaunch the Optimum brand later this month, encompassing all the changes the company has made.
"My hope is that with the rebranding efforts and with some of the other new products that we're launching that we will be able to entice new customers and grow the subscriber base," Dolan said.
