In a rare example of cooperation between rivals, DirecTV Inc. and EchoStar
Communications Corp. launched a Web site last week that encourages their
subscribers in California, Ohio, Nevada and Connecticut to oppose proposed taxes
by sending electronic mail to their state representatives.
DirecTV -- which is running an alert on channel 246 to let subscribers know
about stopsatellitetax.com (www.stopsatellitetax.com/stoptax)
-- said the site generated close to 1 million hits over the weekend, as well as
nearly 3,500 letters to legislators.
