Littleton, Colo. -- EchoStar Communications Corp.
reported $8 million in cash flow during its first quarter, up from a cash-flow loss of $4
million in the same period a year ago, as the direct-broadcast satellite provider trimmed
its operating and net losses.
EchoStar said its total revenue rose 208 percent, to $214.4
million from $69.5 million a year ago, as Dish Network's revenue grew to $135 million
from $56.7 million in the first quarter of 1997.
Before marketing expenses, EchoStar's cash flow grew
to $61 million from $13 million a year ago. The company's operating loss in the
quarter was reduced to $21 million from $45 million a year ago, and its net loss declined
to $50 million, or $1.30 per share of stock, from $63 million ($1.54) last year.
After rising sharply earlier in the week, EchoStar's
share price dipped slightly in Thursday-morning trades after the results were released.
