ESPN started Thursday by inheriting first-round NCAA basketball coverage from
CBS and ended it by accumulating 22 2002 Sports Emmy Award nominations.

Sister network ESPN2 pulled in 12 Emmy nominations, as well, with another
nomination directed to ESPN Classic for its ongoing SportsCentury
series.

But NBC, on the strength of its 2002 Winter Olympic Games coverage from Salt
Lake City -- distributed over CNBC and MSNBC, as well -- led the list of
Emmy-contending services with 36 nominations. Winter Olympics coverage accounted
for 17 nominations, most among any individual programming effort.

Home Box Office's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and SportsCenter
on ESPN tied for second place among individual projects with four
nominations apiece. Among cable networks, HBO was second with 14
nominations.

The other cable networks up for Sports Emmys are Turner Network Television,
TBS Superstation, CNBC, Outdoor Life Network and Fox Sports Net.

A tape-delayed play of the Emmy ceremony will appear on FSN April 27 as a
special edition of BestDamn Sports Show Period, which was
nominated for outstanding daily studio show.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will hand out its
annual Sports Emmys April 21 in New York.
