ESPN Leads Sports Emmy Nods


ESPN leads the field of cable and broadcast networks contending for this
year's Sports Emmy Awards.

The channel picked up 25 nominations, one better than Fox's broadcast sports

Fox Sports Net received three nominations on its own, one for its Best
Damn Sports Show Period
nightly series.

Separate from its mother network, ESPN2 tagged four nominations and ESPN
Classic earned two.

ESPN's NFL Sunday Night Football and Major League Baseball coverage
will vie in the 'Outstanding Live Sports Series' category.

SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, Outside the Lines and
Sunday NFL Countdown were nominated in the studio-show categories.

Flashing Before My Eyes, the Dick Schaap autobiography special completed
several months before his death earlier this year, received three nominations.
Schaap was also posthumously nominated for his work hosting The Sports

ESPN2's nominated work included NHL 2Night, while ESPN Classic was
recognized for its ongoing SportsCentury series and a baseball special
pegged to the World Series.

Home Box Office finished second in cable nominations with 14, many for
Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and On the Record with Bob

Earlier this week, Costas extended his contract with HBO to continue On
the Record
, as well as co-hosting Inside the NFL this fall and
handling the host spot for up to four pay-per-view boxing specials per year.

Turner Network Television was third with five nominations.
