ESPN-The Magazine Heads to China


ESPN and Vertex Communications & Technology Group Ltd. said Wednesday that they will launch a Chinese-language edition of ESPN-The Magazine later this year.

The monthly magazine will be distributed in mainland China, including Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Hong Kong.

It will offer a mix of original content targeted toward sports fans in China, as well as material from the U.S. edition of ESPN-The Magazine, including coverage of international, European, and Chinese soccer; international and Asian basketball leagues, as well as the National Basketball Association; professional golf; track-and-field events; auto racing; and action sports.

“This is an exciting opportunity for ESPN to serve a rapidly growing, passionate sports-fan base in China,” ESPN International senior vice president and managing director Russell Wolff said in a prepared statement.

“The extension of the ESPN brand in China via The Magazine now gives us a print element in this important market to complement our existing ESPN television programming, as well as our leading sports Web site [],” he added.

The U.S. version of ESPN-The Magazine debuted in March 1998 and currently has a circulation of 1.75 million.
