ESPN Makes The Varsity

Production has begun on Varsity Inc., a new six-part reality show that will air on ESPN.

Scheduled to bow on ESPN2 Nov. 29 at 11 p.m. (ET), the four-hour project, presented by Old Spice, will chronicle the 2007 season of the West Monroe (La.) High School Rebels and the town’s obsession with the team and football.

The series, produced in conjunction with Jason Sciavicco, the creator of MTV’s Two-a-Days and his Horizon Entertainment, is the first major effort from the programmer’s recently established ESPN Content Development unit. The show is also slated to encore on college-centric network ESPNU.

Additionally, companion content is planned for broadband service ESPN360.com and ESPN.com, according to company officials.

Varsity Inc. hits at the core of what ECD endeavors will be going forward: it’s a compelling, impassioned story that goes beyond just sports, and offers high quality, multi-purpose content for a variety of our businesses,” said Keith Clinkscales, ESPN senior vice president, content development and enterprises, in a statement.
