In an effort to attract more marquee athletes, ESPN Wednesday announced the
move of its annual ESPY Awards to July from February.
The 2002 ESPY sports awards show will air July 10, one day after Major League
Baseball's All-Star Game, the network said.
The show was initially scheduled for Feb. 4, one day after the National
Football League's rescheduled Super Bowl.
The network has not chosen a venue for the event.
ESPN president George Bodenheimer said the network had been considering a
date switch for the event for some time.
'We've enjoyed great success in February, but long-term, we believe this move
will make the ESPYs more accessible for athletes to attend and fans to enjoy,
given the traditionally light sports calendar on that date,' he said.
After averaging a 2.2 rating in 1999 and 2000, ESPY ratings fell to a 2.0
last year, the network said.
