ESPN, NBC Sports Group to Fill New Year's Day Air with Football

Worldwide Leader Presents Six College Gridiron Contests, While NBC Sports Net Kicks Off BPL Trio

While ESPN has football covered on New Year’s Day, NBC Sports Group has futbol across the pond lined up.

The worldwide leader has a six-pack of bowl games on tap, including the Capital One Bowl matching No. 19 Wisconsin against No. 9 on ABC and ESPN’s Rose Bowl pitting No. 5 Stanford versus No. 4 Michigan State.

Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group will showcase 10 Barclays Premier League matches on Jan. 1, highlighted by a tripleheader on national cable service NBC Sports Network: Swansea City-Manchester City and Southampton-Chelsea, capped by Manchester United-Tottenham.

The other seven games will air on the Premier League Extra, comprising a series of ad hoc channels, a la out-of-market sports services -- that MPVDs offer free of charge to NBC Sports Network subscribers. 

For its part, broadcast network NBC will present the 2014 NHL Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs from Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. at 1 p.m. The outdoor game is expected to draw the largest puck sport crowd ever, upward of 100,000 will convene at The Big House.
