ESPN’s Home Run Derby Strikes Out


ESPN’s July 14 Home Run Derby telecast whiffed from a ratings
perspective, falling 29% below last year’s numbers.

The annual event, which pits Major League Baseball players in a
home-run-hitting contest, averaged a 4.3 rating, down from a 6.1 last year,
according to the network.

An ESPN representative would not provide reasons for the show’s decline, but
this year’s show did not include such marquee players as Barry Bonds and Sammy

Overall, ESPN is averaging a 1.09 rating for its MLB telecasts through the
All-Star break, even with last year’s numbers for the same period, network
officials said.
