ESPN will celebrate Major League Baseball’s best defensive plays of the 2003 season with a special Friday night.
The network’s Baseball Tonight
show will present the "Web Gems Awards" Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. (EST).
A Web Gem will be issued to the most skillful defensive "gem,” as determined by the entire Baseball Tonight
staff from a list of five finalists at each of the nine defensive positions.
The program will also feature an award for the top defensive team of the year and an historic look at some of the plays that would have been Web Gems prior to such designations during the 2000 season.
Former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie "The Wizard" Smith will be honored for his career accomplishments with the Web Gem lifetime achievement award.
