ESPN has revamped its executive suite, with president George Bodenheimer
announcing several organizational changes and promotions.
Chief among them: the naming of Mark Shapiro to head all of the company's
programming and the development of its event business, as well as the elevation
of John Walsh to broaden his editorial oversight beyond ESPN.com to all of the
company's news content.
Elsewhere, Bodenheimer announced the elevation of Sean Bratches to executive
vice president, affiliate sales and marketing, from senior vice president,
affiliate sales and marketing; Artie Bulgrin to senior vice president, research
and sales development, from vice president, research and sales development; and
Tony Tamburo from vice president, management-information services, to senior
vice president, MIS.
'This group of executives, with their tremendous creativity and energy, has
for many years made an outstanding contribution to the growth of ESPN,'
Bodenheimer said in a prepared statement. 'Their new positions will make ESPN
even better-positioned for the future.'
Shapiro, who had been serving as vice president, general manager of ESPN
Classic and ESPN Original Entertainment, now oversees the entire programming
department and reports directly to Bodenheimer.
In his new post, Shapiro -- who was the coordinating producer for ESPN's
Peabody- and Emmy Award-winning SportsCentury series and began heading
ESPN Classic in 2000, before adding oversight for ESPN Original Entertainment
this year -- is responsible for the development, acquisition and scheduling of
all programming for ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Classic. He is also in charge of ESPN
Event Creation and Management, comprising the X-Games and ESPN Outdoors
Focusing his attention largely on ESPN.com, Walsh, ESPN's senior vice
president and executive editor, will broaden his purview to oversight and
coordination of all of ESPN's news content, including SportsCenter,
ESPN2's 2Night series, ESPNews, ESPN Radio and ESPN-The
