The total sports network is expanding its interests in the old- and new-media
ESPN will sell a test issue of EXPN Magazine -- a title aimed at the
action-sports competition set and its culture -- at its upcoming X Games
competition in Philadelphia Aug. 17 through 22, ESPN-The Magazine
publisher and vice president Andy Sippel said.
Meanwhile, ESPN Today, the interactive sports channel on DirecTV Inc.'s
'DirecTV Interactive' service, attracted a significant number of visits during
its first four weeks.
The 116-page EXPN Magazine prototype will be available at the First
Union Center, the primary X Games venue during the six-day event, as well as at
the seven ESPN Zone restaurants in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago;
Baltimore; Atlanta; Las Vegas; and Anaheim, Calif. Moreover, the title will also
be sold at 1,000 Barnes & Noble Inc. and B. Dalton Bookseller book outlets
around the nation.

ESPN-The Magazine senior vice president and editor in chief John
'Given the success ESPN has had in growing the action-sports marketplace,
it's very logical that we pursue this. We will evaluate our next steps after the
X Games to see what is in store for the future regarding a possible launch
date,' Sippel said in a prepared statement.
Elsewhere, ESPN Today recorded 533,788 separate visits during the four weeks
after its June 5 launch, according to Wink Communications Inc., the company
furnishing the technology to operate the interactive service.
Combined with usage figures for ESPN's other interactive-television offering
-- the scores-on-demand application on ESPN and ESPN2 -- there were a total of
nearly 2.26 million separate visits during the four-week span.
ESPN Today is available to more than 2 million DirecTV subscribers on channel
490. The service provides viewers with text and graphics of sports-related data,
including top news articles, scores, statistics, standings and schedules, as
well as links to ESPN networks.
