Sports fans: Get ready to wear your team’s colors Sept. 7.

ESPN is helping to launch a national fund-raiser, “Show Your Spirit Day!,” in which sports fans can band together and support the fight against cancer.

On Sept. 7 -- which also happens to be ESPN’s 25th anniversary -- individuals, friends, companies, schools and organizations can celebrate their love of sports by donning team apparel and making financial contributions to benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The minimum requested donation is $5 per participating individual.

Founded in 1993 by ESPN and late college-basketball coach and commentator Jim Valvano, the foundation funds essential research. To date, it has raised more than $40 million and awarded more than 200 research grants for all types of cancer.

Those interested in participating in the fund-raiser event are invited to log onto the foundation’s Web site (www.jimmyv.org) and click “Show Your Spirit” to register.

Once registered, participating organizations will receive personalized V Foundation kits to help in organizing their Show Your Spirit events. The kits include posters, booklets with sample press releases, electronic-mail correspondence, advertisements, logos, collection envelopes, participatory V pins and other materials.

Individuals can choose not to register and still make donations through credit cards by visiting the site or sending checks made payable to The V Foundation for Cancer Research to 100 Towerview Court, Cary, N.C., 27513.

"Imagine the majority of sports fans across the country uniting to make a difference for cancer research," ESPN/ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer said in a prepared statement.

“Cancer touches us all -- our families and friends,” he added. “Show Your Spirit Day! will create national teamwork and commitment for a great cause. A strong response will provide a major boost in the ongoing battle against this dreaded disease.”

V Foundation CEO Nick Valvano added: “It’s vital that we continue to find new ways to activate support for cancer research. Show Your Spirit Day! is a powerful opportunity to translate winning spirit into the cancer fight. This event will truly be ‘The Season of the Fan’ thanks to support from ESPN, organizations of all sizes and fans nationwide."
