FCC: Broadband Up 34% in 2004

Broadband penetration jumped 34% in 2004 to bring total lines in service to 38 million, the Federal Communications Commission reported Thursday.

Breaking down the numbers, the FCC found that digital-subscriber-line providers had a better year than cable, with DSL climbing by 45% and cable-modem subscribers by 30%.

But cable had more total subscribers than DSL -- 21.4 million, compared with 13.8 million.
