Washington -- The FCC has launched what it calls the Data
Innovation Initiative, and created the position of chief data officer (CDO) to
oversee the effort.

The initiative is an effort to "modernize and
streamline" how it gathers, applies and makes data available. That
included requesting input from the public on data practices of the Media,
Wireless, and Wireline bureaus, including what data collection should continue
and what could be eliminated.

The new CDO will be Greg Elin, who has been associate
managing director of new media at the commission.

The effort will feature a cross bureau "data team"made up of
Robert Alderfer, CDO of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau; Kris Monteith,
deputy chief and CDO of the Media Bureau; and Steven Rosenberg, CDO of the
Wireline Competition Bureau.

In addition, Michael Byrne will be named to the
new post of Geographic Information Officer. He will have a key data-collection
job -- leading national broadband mapping in coordination with the National
Telecommunications & Information Administration.
