FCC Extends VoIP E911 Compliance

For the second time, the Federal Communications Commission has extended the deadline for ensuring that voice-over-Internet-protocol customers are aware of emergency-calling limitations.

On Tuesday, the FCC said it would give providers until Oct. 31 to achieve 100% compliance. Less than total compliance requires providers to terminate service accounts that have failed to acknowledge E911.

Last Thursday, Charter Communications Inc. told the commission that it expects to do no better than 80% compliance, citing various factors such as “consumers hanging up on Charter representatives.”
