The Federal Communications Commission Monday launched a rulemaking designed to expand the scope of rules that require good-faith conduct in retransmission-consent negotiations.
Current FCC rules apply the good-faith requirement only to TV stations. A new law passed by Congress last year expanded the requirement to cover all pay TV providers, including cable and direct-broadcast satellite providers. The good-faith requirement sunsets Jan. 1, 2010.
The FCC launched the rulemaking in response to the change in law. Although the agency solicited public comment, it said it planned to make a simple amendment to its rules that includes pay TV providers.
