Finisar Files Patent Suit vs. DirecTV

Finisar Corp. filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas Wednesday accusing DirecTV Inc. of violating patents for an information-transmission system, AP reported.

The optical-networks-gear manufacturer said it is seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief, according to AP.

Finisar said the direct-broadcast satellite giant infringed patents for technology that provides access to the contents of a large database while using a “manageable amount of bandwidth,” AP reported.

The company added that one potential use for the technology is the transmission of electronic programming guides via DBS, according to AP.

Finisar told AP it contacted DirecTV in 2004 and early 2005 hoping to engage it in licensing discussions, but its requests were not successful.
