Fox News Channel drew 2.6 million viewers with its daytime inauguration coverage Thursday, up 30% over the same festivities in 2001, according to Nielsen Media Research data supplied by network officials.
In contrast, Cable News Network and MSNBC saw numbers for their inauguration coverage from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. drop compared with four years ago. CNN had 779,000 viewers, down 63% versus 2001, according to Nielsen, while MSNBC was down 68% to 438,000.
In primetime Thursday, Fox News racked up 2.4 million viewers, up 57% over 2001. CNN had 1.4 million viewers, a 14% drop from 2001, while MSNBC had 385,000, down 47%.
During the day, Fox News also outperformed CNN and MSNBC in the 25-54 demographic. Fox News averaged 705,000 in that age group, while CNN averaged 168,000 and MSNBC averaged 141,000, according to Nielsen.
