Fox Sets Soccer High With Chelsea-Liverpool Match

Fox achieved a new high viewership figure for the Barclays (English) Premier League in the United States, drawing 1.67 million viewers to a Sunday-afternoon delayed telecast of Liverpool defeating Chelsea, 2-1.

As reported by the Web site EPLTalk.com, Fox Soccer carried the game live Sunday, several hours ahead of the Fox broadcast, and the live version drew about 360,000 viewers. In the Sunday contest, at Chelsea's home field in London, Maxi Rodriguez and Glen Johnson goals led Liverpool to victory.

Overnight ratings had indicated the Fox telecast more than doubled the rating ESPN achieved Sunday night for the primetime telecast of the MLS Cup final, USA Todayobserved. In that match, David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the Houston Dynamo, 1-0, on a goal by Landon Donovan.

Fox will show one more BPL game this season: Chelsea vs. reigning BPL title holder Manchester Uniter on Feb. 5, Super Bowl Sunday.
