Free PVRs from News Corp.?

News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch said Wednesday that the company might give away personal video recorders if it gains control of direct-broadcast satellite provider DirecTV Inc.

Speaking at News Corp.’s annual meeting, Murdoch said he expects the company’s $6.6 billion deal to acquire 34% of DirecTV parent Hughes Electronics Corp. to receive regulatory approval "within weeks."

He added that he did not want to ignite a price war with DirecTV's major rival, EchoStar Communications Corp., which has begun giving away free PVRs to lure subscribers to its Dish Network DBS service.
