Trend-setting MSO General Communications Inc. is offering free cable-modem service to customers who sign up for certain cable services on its Anchorage, Alaska, system.
GCI said it’s offering new and current customers free "LiteSpeed" cable-modem service if they subscribe to its basic-cable or higher-tier cable service, GCI telephone service or its long-distance package.
"We want to make it easier than ever for dial-up customers to enjoy the convenience of always-on connections at two to three times their current access speed," GCI Internet general manager Terry Nidiffer said in a prepared statement.
New customers receive the free LiteSpeed product, no activation fee, one electronic-mail address, 1 gigabyte of included throughput per month and 634-kilobits-per-second access speed.
GCI also offers a "LiteSpeed Plus" product at 120 kbps, five megabytes of Web space, two e-mail addresses and two GB of included throughput at $24.99 per month.
GCI said its modem service is available to 91% of Alaskan homes.
