Gemstar-TV Guide International combined the operations of two business units, TV Guide on Screen and TV Guide Interactive, to form the North American TV Guide IPG (interactive program guide) business, the company announced Friday.
The company picked Tom Carson -- formerly head of the TV Guide on Screen group, which licensed IPG content and technology to consumer-electronics manufacturers -- to be president of the new group.
Carson's responsibilities will expand to include licensing IPG technology to set-top-box makers for cable and satellite providers. He will continue to report to Mike McKee, Gemstar-TV Guide's chief operating officer, who oversees the company's worldwide IPG business.
McKee, in a prepared statement announcing the move, said: "At this stage in our development, it makes sense to combine our two IPG groups and manage them together. One of the goals of this move is to strengthen and bring added depth to our team, and we hope to do this by sharing resources, talents and best practices in product planning, marketing, engineering, sales and operations."
