Google Nov. 1 announced Nov. 10 availability for its Daydream View virtual reality headset, with a retail price of $79. The headsets work with Daydream-enabled phones, and will be first available at Best Buy stores.
“With Daydream View and a Daydream-ready phone like Pixel, you’ll be able to kick back in your personal cinema, explore new worlds and get in the game like never before,” Mike Jazayeri, director of product management for Google VR, wrote in a blog post.
Per the post, Daydream View will be available November 10 on the Google Store and at retailers in five countries:
-United States: Verizon, Best Buy; $79 (USD)
-Canada: Bell, Rogers, Telus, Best Buy; $99 (CAD)
-United Kingdom: EE, Carphone Warehouse; £69 (GBP)
-Germany: Deutsche Telekom; €69 (EUR)
-Australia: Telstra, JB Hi-Fi; $119 (AUD)
The debut of Daydream View is expected to give the VR headset market a lift. IHS expects smartphone-powered VR headsets to represent 87% of the market’s installed base by the end of 2016. Though the Oculus-powered Samsung Gear VR will have the largest installed base of all major branded headsets with 5.4 million this year, IHS also expects the Daydream View to “slowly disrupt Samsung’s dominant market position” and become the most popular headset for VR by 2019.
