Google Fiber has entered the TV Everywhere domain with word that its video subscribers now have access to Watch ESPN and Watch Disney, authenticated apps from the Disney stable that allow customers to stream live TV feeds in the home or on the go.
Watch ESPN offers access to eight services (including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS, ESPN Goal Line and ESPN Buzzer Beater) on Web browsers, Android and iOS devices, the Xbox 360 and the Apple TV box. Google Fiber subs can also login for Watch Disney, but apparently can also tap into the TV Everywhere apps for Disney Junior and Disney HD, according to this blog post from Google Fiber project manager Larry Yang.
Watch ESPN and Watch Disney are the first and only TV Everywhere services, so far, to join the Google Fiber lineup, according to this Web page dedicated to the distributor's TVE offerings. The site also notes that Google Fiber TV "will continue to evolve over time with new features and functionality, which might include the ability to access HBO shows with HBO GO."
On Thursday, Synacor said it is providing the TV Everywhere authentication system that is being used by Google Fiber.
Google has already connected multiple “fiberhoods” in Kansas City, Kan.; and Kansas City, Mo., but has not released any subscriber figures.
Google Fiber is preparing to debut its mix of 1 Gbps and pay-TV services in Provo, Utah, announcing earlier this month that “several thousand” residents that were linked to the original iProvo/Veracity Networks plant can now sign up for services. Sign-ups for the rest of Provo will get underway in January.
Google Fiber plans to start connecting homes in Austin, Texas, by mid-2014.
