Stargate Atlantis, a spinoff from Sci Fi Channel and syndicated hit Stargate SG-1, is officially joining Sci Fi’s schedule next summer.
Early next year, MGM Television Entertainment will start production on 21 episodes. The show is being synched to launch alongside the eighth season of SG-1, which is scheduled to resume its seventh season on Sci Fi in January.
SG-1’s premise involves an ancient mechanical portal -- the Stargate -- that transports U.S. military teams to other planets. In Atlantis, a secret base built by the Stargate network’s creators is discovered on Earth, on the site of the lost city of Atlantis.
"The implications of this amazing discovery lead the Atlantis team to a distant galaxy where a primitive human civilization is threatened by a sinister new enemy," Sci Fi said in a press release.
No casting details were released. Sci Fi had said in March that Atlantis was in development.
The new show’s executive producers are SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright and current executive producer Robert Cooper.
