National Geographic Channel has tapped actor/director Tom Hanks to participate in its upcoming docu-film Killing Lincoln.

Hanks will serve as the on-camera host, historical commentator and narrator for the two-hour project, based on Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly’s best-selling book Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever.

The film, produced by Scott Free Productions, will debut in 2013, according to network officials.

“Having someone like Tom who is so passionate about history and such an incredible storyteller join National Geographic Channel on this project will add even more energy and gravitas to this epic historical moment being retold for contemporary audiences,” said National Geographic Channel President Howard Owens in a statement.
