Harmonic has shipped more than 1 million quadrature amplitude modulation devices -- used to deliver digital cable services -- to customers worldwide, including 18 of the 20 largest U.S. operators.
Edge QAMs are used for broadcast digital cable TV, video-on-demand, switched digital video, modular cable modem termination systems and cable IPTV services. All told, MSOs serving more than 50 million cable TV subscribers around the world have deployed Harmonic's NSG edge QAMs.
Harmonic has been developing the high-density HectoQAM platform for more than two years designed to deliver up to 100 QAMs per port. The HectoQAM had been targeted for availability in mid-2010.
"The NSG's top market-share position is driven by Harmonic's continuous commitment to product excellence and ongoing technology innovation in the edge QAM category," said Gil Katz, Harmonic's senior director of cable solutions.
Other suppliers of edge QAMs include Arris, BigBand Networks, Cisco Systems, Motorola and Vecima Networks. BigBand, for one, said it had shipped more than 750,000 edge QAMs as of the end of March 2010.
