HBO Sets On-Air Roster For Women's Tennis Event At MSG

HBO Sports has enlisted broadcast veterans to call its upcoming women's tennis extravaganza at Madison Square Garden.
Mary Carillo and John McEnroe will serve as the broadcast team for the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean KingCup, which will air live from MSG on Monday March 2 at 7:30 p.m. (ET). They will be joined by King herself, as well sideline reporter Michael Barkann.
Marking the return of HBO -- which televised the Wimbledon fortnight for 25 years --  to professional tennis, the event pits four of the world's top female tennis players, 2009 Australian Open and 2008 U.S. Open champion Serena Williams, 2008 Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and 2008 year-end world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, against each other in a one-night, single elimination event. The prize pool for the players is $1.2 million.
"The notion of having Mary, Billie Jean and John broadcasting together during our live coverage of the ‘BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup' is nirvana for tennis fans in the U.S.," said HBO Sports executive producer Rick Bernstein in a statement. "They are three of the most compelling figures in tennis broadcasting, and we're delighted that they will be in the booth, calling the action for this brand new event."
