UPDATED: Manny Pacquiao was a big winner inside the ring during his Nov. 23 pay-per-view fight against Brandon Rios, but was less successful in the pay-per-view boxing arena.
The China-based event, in which Pacquiao won an easy decision over Rios, drew approximately 475,000 PPV buys, according to HBO Sports senior vice president Mark Taffet. The number falls well below the 1 million buys Pacquiao generated both in his June 2012 loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. and in his December 2012 knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez.
Taffet said that having the fight in China ultimately hurt its PPV performance. “PPV events originating from oversees typically do between 30% to 40% of the buys compared to similar events which originate from the U.S.,“ Taffet said. “We knew there would be challenges and tempered our expectations from the beginning.”
Pacquiao could return to the PPV ring sometime in April in a potential rematch against either Bradley or Marquez.
