HBO's 17 Nominations Lead Golden Globes

With multiple nods for a number of shows and movies, HBO set the pace with 17 Golden Globe nominations. Showtime and Fox were second with five apiece.

Cable claimed four of the five nominations for top television drama series from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 67th annual Golden Globe Awards. AMC's retro advertising series Mad Men is back to defend its crown. HBO's polygamy series Big Love and vampire skein True Blood are in the hunt, joined by Showtime's serial killer show Dexter. Fox's medical program House is the sole broadcast entry in the category.

Big Love

Conversely, HBO's Hollywood buddy series Entourage is the only cable contender in comedy or musical comedy, where NBC's 30 Rock will look to repeat. Lead-in The Office, and rookies, ABC's Modern Family and Fox's Glee, also earned nominations.

Naturally, cable is well-represented in the miniseries or movie category, where HBO has Grey Gardens, Into the Storm and Taking Chance, Lifetime received a nod for Georgia O'Keefe (Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons also earned noms for their lead roles) as did PBS's interpretation of Dickens' Little Dorrit. Lifetime noted its total of four nominations were a personal best.

All told, cable collected 34 of the 55 Golden Globe TV nominations. Broadcast garnered 18 and PBS three.
As for individual shows, Glee led the way with four, followed by 30 Rock, Big Love, FX's Damages, Dexter, Georgia O'Keefe, Grey Gardens, Into The Storm and Mad Men.

House, Entourage, HBO's gigolo comedy Hung, The Office, Taking Chance and True Blood all had a pair.

Each of the following shows received one Glove nomination: Showtime's Californication, United States of Tara and Nurse Jackie; TNT's The Closer; Lifetime's Prayers For Bobby; ABC's Cougar Town, Modern Family and Lost; CBS's How I Met Your Mother, The Mentalist, The Good Wife and The Courageous Heart of Irene Sendler; and PBS's Wallander: One Step Behind, Endgame and Little Dorrit.

Among the early reactions on Twitter, Kurt Sutter, the flamboyant creator of snubbed FX series Sons of Anarchy, expressed his disappointment bluntly on his Twitter account. Among other things: "GGs like the emmys are a popularity contest voted on by lazy old reporters who pick the buzz-worthy and the obvious." He added he was "bitter."

NBC will broadcast the Golden Globes ceremony live, hosted by actor Ricky Gervais, on Jan. 17.
