Homestead, Fla.-Migrant farmworkers and their families in the area were treated to a special screening here of the Home Box Office/Edward James Olmos documentary, Americanos: Latino Life In The U.S., last Monday (May 1), a few days before the Cinco de Mayo celebration of Mexican heritage.
Working in partnership with the Migrant Education Program of the Miami/Dade Public Schools and the Mexican-American Council, Americanos was shown for invited guests in the South Dade High School Auditorium.
Local organizers included Schools Migrant Education Program director Cipriano Garza; Maria Garza of the Mexican-American Council; South Dade High School principal George Ellis and activities director Tommy Coats; and Adelphia Communications Corp. marketing director Jean Simmons.
Conceived and co-produced by actor and activist Olmos, Americanos features three- to six-minute profiles filmed in Miami, Los Angeles, San Diego, New Mexico, Illinois, New York and other locations. The documentary focuses on Latino-American individuals or groups and the unique ways by which they express their culture and individuality.
Also invited were senior honor students at South Dade High School. Students contributed to the event with musical groups, adding a festive note.
