The United States and Canada will account for some 26% of the worldwide market for digital set-tops in 2009, according to a new study from IMS Research.
Deployments of advanced set-tops, with features such as HDTV and digital-video recorders, will drive growth in shipments in the region, IMS said.
“Until now, midrange set-tops, such as ones enabling interactive services, have made up the largest share of this market,” IMS market analyst Paul Erickson said in a prepared statement.
“This is expected to change by the end of 2005, as both cable and satellite operators continue to deploy advanced HD and DVR boxes,” he added. “Additionally, more over-the-air HD broadcasts will create demand for HD DTT [digital-terrestrial-television] boxes.”
