Boxing observers can debate whether undefeated, pound-for-pound boxing champion Floyd Mayweather is the greatest fighter of this or any generation. But there’s no debating that “Money” Mayweather’s is the cable industry’s undisputed pay-per-view revenue champ.
Mayweather’s fights account for the only two PPV events to ever surpass the 2 millionbuy mark — the record 2.5 million take during his 2007 fight with Oscar De La Hoya, and his Sept. 14 bout against Canelo Alvarez, which currently stands at 2.2 million buys but could surpass Mayweather-De La Hoya when all the cash is counted.
The Mayweather-Alvarez fight, in which Mayweather won a majority decision to increase his record to 45-0, already knocked out Mayweather-De La Hoya’s $136 million PPV-event revenue record, garnering $150 million and counting.
Overall, Mayweather over the past decade has generated more than 13 million in PPV buys and $750 million in PPV revenue, according to Showtime executive vice president Stephen Espinoza. That easily bests such fighters as heavyweight champions Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson, who fought during PPV’s heyday in the 1990s.
PPV’s gravy train isn’t looking to slow down, either. The 36-year-old Mayweather last week told boxing writers in New York that he’ll fight at least in May and September over the next two years to finish out his six-fight deal with Showtime, providing himself and the PPV industry with more knockout payday opportunities.
