Not quite in time for last-minute holiday shoppers, HSN this week debuted a free iPad application that provides live streaming video and 15 video-on-demand channels -- and, of course, lets you buy stuff on HSN.com.
The HSN App for iPad, released Dec. 21, lets users stream live video from HSN and HSN2 or watch previously aired content from the network's video library while simultaneously browsing related products on the bottom half of the screen. Users are able to enlarge either aspects of the app, allowing for more viewing room for video or products.
While rival QVC launched its own iPad app last month, HSN claims to have a leg up with its app that offers 15 VOD channels for different product categories, including fashion, jewelry, kitchen, electronics, shoes/handbags and home. In addition, the HSN app allows customers to create up to five of their own personalized channels, selecting their favorite brands or categories of merchandise and compiling videos focused on these preferences.
"HSN's business exists at the intersection of entertainment, commerce and lifestyle programming, and the iPad technology gives us the perfect platform to deliver our customers an immersive experience that incorporates all three elements," HSN vice president of advanced services John McDevitt said. "The HSN App for iPad is also another new way for our customers to shop wherever they are, whenever they want."
HSN also has apps for the iPhone, Google's Android operating system, and Windows 7 phones, as well as an optimized mobile website at http://m.hsn.com.
Based in St. Petersburg, Fla., HSN distributes its linear channel to 95 million U.S. households. HSN is an operating segment of HSN Inc., which is 32% owned by Liberty Media.
